Hybrid cars have been gaining relevance in Mexico as technology advances and are introduced much more naturally in our daily lives.
All-electric vehicles have not been well received in our country for various reasons that differ in nature from one to the other: the price, the lack of public infrastructure for charging devices, among others.
However, hybrid cars are increasingly sought after for their fuel economy and other tax benefits such as exemption from possession, endorsement, payment of ISAN tax and VAT. To learn more, check out 5 reasons why buy an electric car.
Therefore, we decided to present in this count of the 10 hybrid cars 2018 some of the vehicles with a double motor (gasoline + electric) that are currently sold in Mexico.
1. Nissan X-Trail Hybrid
The Japanese brand, in general, has a large part of the market in Mexico since its vehicles are the best sellers in any segment, and it is with the Nissan X-Trail that they decided to aim everything at the hybrids and managed to position themselves as one of the better options
The Nissan X-Trail Hybrid is the third generation of the SUV, and in addition to having an excellent performance is very well equipped and has a reasonable cost. Its petrol engine is a 2-liter that gives 140 horsepower, and another electric 30 KW, with 40 more horses.
This second motor is recharged regeneratively absorbing the energy lost during braking. You can read the full review of the Nissan X-Trail Hybrid 2018 here.
2. Kia Niro
The Kia Niro holds the Guinness record for the car with the lowest fuel consumption (at least in the United States, where the measurement was made), as it boasts a combined performance of 26.9 kilometers per liter.
It also has regenerative braking energy system, and its durable lithium-ion polymer battery located under the rear seats provides electrical power and regulates the temperature effectively. The maximum power of the Kia Niro is 146 horsepower and maximum torque 195 foot-pounds.
3. Hyundai Ioniq
The Hyundai Ioniq’s dual motorization is powered by a high-efficiency permanent magnet electric motor that delivers 43 HP and 125 lb.-ft. of torque. In addition, it has a gasoline engine of 1.6 liters Kappa GDI, Atkinson cycle, with which reaches a thermal efficiency of 40 percent.
The hybrid Hyundai Ioniq combined system achieves a combined power of 139 horsepower. The battery has a lithium polymer with a capacity of 240 V, which has better charge efficiency, discharge, and better energy emission than nickel batteries.
4. Prius C
The Prius is the best known of all hybrid car, and after his great acceptance by the Mexican public, Toyota decided to make a hatchback version and name Prius C.
It is aesthetically much friendlier compared to its colleague; The Toyota Prius C looks very youthful and dynamic because of its shape, but also because of the various bright colors in which the body is available.
The first engine corresponds to a synchronous type generator with permanent magnets and cooled by air that gives 60 horsepower, while the second is a 4-cylinder 1.5-liter, 16-valve that offers a power of 72 HP. The hybrid battery of the Prius C is made of nickel with metal hydride and has a voltage of 144V.
5. Acura NSX
The heart of the Acura NSX consists of a V6-i Bi-turbo petrol engine with an “electric drive” engine connected to the transmission, and 2 twin electric motors connected to the independent front suspension for each front wheel.
The engine is handmade and requires 5 hours of work by craftsmen who create it from scratch, only for assembly. The combined maximum power of the Acura NSX is 573 horsepower, its maximum torque is 176 lb-ft and its top speed is at 301 km/hr.
6. BMW i8
The hybrid BMW i8 has the differential feature that it is a sports car and it is also a plug-in. The BMW brand embodied in it the concept ” BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics “, which is focused on being a technological leader fully oriented towards energy saving.
With this in mind, the BMW i8 achieves sporty driving performance with all the benefits of a second electric motor.
7. BMW 3 Series 330th sedan
The performance of the BMW 3 Series 330e sedan is provided by a combination of engines: the electric motor and the BMW Twinpower Turbo, offering the best of both worlds in a, particularly dynamic and comfortable sedan.
The electric motor of the BMW 3 Series 330e sedan has a total autonomy of 35 kilometers, with which you achieve maximum efficiency and a driving without emissions. The high-voltage battery is under the trunk. Like the previous BMW, this is also a plug-in hybrid car and can be charged in a domestic connector thanks to an adapter.
8. Chevrolet Volt
The lithium-ion battery of the fully charged Chevrolet Volt allows you to drive up to 80 kilometers without using gasoline. This battery corresponds to a second generation that is lighter and can store more energy.
Through the regen on demand with regenerative braking each that you brake the battery is recharged. When the battery runs out, Volt automatically activates the gasoline generator to keep you on the road.
The Chevrolet Volt includes a portable charger of 120 V with which you can charge it completely in approximately 7 hours and another fixed wall of 240 V with which it will reach its full charge in just 4 hours. The double motorization together achieves 149 horsepower and 294-foot-pounds of torque.
9. Ford Fusion Hybrid
Ford made the Fusion a highly sought after hybrid vehicle in the market in this segment. On the one hand, it has a 2.0-liter combustion engine with Atkinson cycle, and on the other, an electric motor with regenerative braking.
Together, both engines achieve a power of 188 horsepower, while in electric mode the maximum speed oscillates at 135 kilometers per hour. The battery is made of lithium ion and is automatically recharged thanks to a generator.
When the Ford Fusion advances at low speeds it uses the electric motor, and when it requires more power it makes the change to both engines to achieve sufficient power. In the last change that received the Fusion, the weight of the battery was reduced 20 kilos, going from 68 to 48 kg, which favors its acceleration.
10. Porsche Panamera 4 e-Hybrid
The Porsche Panamera 4 e-Hybrid is on this list with a surprising combined fuel consumption of 2.5 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. While other hybrids suffer from reaching some power, the Porsche Panamera can go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.6 seconds thanks to its combined power of 462 horsepower, added to the 340 KW of power.
